Volunteers Sought: Science in ACTion Micro-drone Dome!

Greg Farrugia is running drone demonstrations at the Old Bus Depot in Kingston as part of National Science Week on 12th and 13th August. He is seeking a few volunteers who may be interested in learning a little more about drones to support at the event over the two days.

Would you have any students that you think might be interested? Or is it something you’d be keen to volunteer for and learn a bit more about?

To make the event flow well and provide more time to interact with the public, at least one volunteer would be required most of the time, particularly if they have an interest in public outreach, drones or STEM in general.

Greg will be at the Old Bus Depot from around:

  • 9:30am-2:30pm on Friday 12 August, which is the schools day
  • 9:30am-4pm on Saturday 13 August, which is the public day

The Micro-Drone Dome will provide the public with a very short sample flight using a micro-drone inside a 2m x 2m tent. The remote pilot (public member) will be outside the tent.

The volunteers would help in many ways, including the following:

  • enter the Drone Dome (tent) to set up each drone for flight and re-position any drone that is stuck
  • help remote pilots to learn how to fly
  • answer questions from the public
  • keep the drones charged and ready for use
  • generally assist to keep the show safe and enjoyable.

It is hard to predict how popular this will be. If there are quiet times, the volunteers are encouraged to enjoy flying the micro-drones themselves, to practice their skills and entertain any spectators. They may also want to take a look at the rest of the fantastic stalls at the expo.

Greg will teach the volunteers the basics that they need on the day – no specialist training is required, just a willingness to help this hands-on experience be a good one.

Please get in touch with Greg if you are interested, and let him know that you heard about his activity via InTEACT.
